At the ESA Council meeting at Ministerial Level 2016 in Lucerne, the Ministers of the ESA Member States adopted the landmark resolution “Towards Space 4.0 for a United Space in Europe”. This chapter provides insights into the concept of space 4.0 and the way ESA understands and implements its role in this current era. Building on its 50 years of experience as Europe’s Space Agency, conceiving and implementing with great success exciting and societally beneficial space projects, ESA has embarked on its journey through this new era. To capture ESA’s conception of its own role in Space 4.0, the Agency has coined its own motto of Space 4.0i with four verbs to portray its main lines of action: inform, innovate, interact and inspire. This chapter not only depicts and deciphers the Leitmotiv of Space 4.0i and its components, but also provides concrete examples of how ESA implements its role for the benefit of the European citizen, society and economy.
