For a developing country like Bangladesh, importance of pavement monitoring is increasing with the surge of vehicle number on the road. Traditionally, road profilers consisting of laser and inertial sensors are used for pavement monitoring, and the operation cost for monitoring pavements with these devises is notably high. Therefore, researches are going on to develop new methods for monitoring pavements regularly which are cost effective, rapid and can be easily implemented. In this paper, a new method for monitoring pavement condition is introduced utilizing non-commercial vehicle dynamics and smartphone sensors. In the first step, estimation of the vehicle suspension damping parameter which usually unknown in the case of ordinary vehicle is performed using a system identification technique. Later, an inverse mathematical model of vehicle dynamics is developed from state-space representation of the vehicle dynamics and using the vertical acceleration data obtained by driving the vehicle over the pavement to be monitored, pavement profile is estimated. From the estimated profile, International Roughness Index (IRI) of the pavement is calculated. It is observed from the numerical simulation that the method is reliable and efficient in monitoring the pavement condition.
