Abstract In 2014, the transportation sector emitted 7.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), accounting for more than 15 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.1 Emissions from road transportation are projected to grow more than 30 percent by 2030,2 spurred largely by a dramatic increase in cars and trucks in China, India, and other developing economies. Although onroad vehicles account for the lion’s share of transportation sector emissions (72 percent), aviation (11 percent) and shipping (11 percent) are also important contributors,3 and their share of transportation emissions is likely to rise as on-road vehicles become more efficient.
