With good planning, dedication, and a not insignificant amount of good luck, the time to launch arrives. For Gemini 5, two days after a false start on their first launch attempt, the Titan launch vehicle carrying Cooper and Conrad rocketed off the pad to begin their week in orbit, to push the boundaries of what was already known about human spaceflight and explore uncharted territory. The real legacy of Gemini 5 began on that day, as the two astronauts journeyed into the heavens to record human spaceflight not in hours or days, but weeks, meeting head-on the psychological and physical barrier of seven days away from their home planet for the first time. Nearly six decades after Cooper and Conrad took their ride for that first week in orbit, flights of many months have now become the norm on ever more adventurous missions.
