Owing to the broad soil variabilities in Indian subsoil profile well-graded granular backfill as per the specifications is not well available for the construction of geosynthetic-reinforced earth wall. Procuring such specific granular economically within a reasonable lead is becoming a serious challenge on many highway projects. In this regard, poorly graded backfill can be understood to be soil that has either some cohesion and/ or lesser friction angle than required. Using such soil as reinforced backfill requires additional modeling and design considerations such as drainage. In the present paper, a discussion has been made on the utilization of poorly graded more fine materials as the backfill material. In case of poorly draining backfill different problems associated are discussed. The numerical analysis of geosynthetic-reinforced soil walls for this study has been carried out using the computer program ABAQUS. In this FE analysis, three-dimensional model has been used. Parametric studies have been carried out with different combination of material properties, reinforcement strength, facing type, facing stiffness, and wall height. The improper choice of all the combinations can lead to the local as well as global failure of the reinforced soil walls.
