Abstract Transport accounts for almost a quarter of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions and is the main contributor to air pollution in cities. Moreover, it is one of the most important noise sources shaping the acoustic climate in urban areas. For this reason, there have been actions implemented in the European Union for years now aimed at improving air quality, with a view to meeting by 2030 standards at the levels set by the WHO. One of them, which is to significantly reduce the environmental burden generated by road transport, is the replacement of conventionally powered cars with pure electric BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicle). This paper, basing on comparison of cars with different types of propulsion (gasoline, diesel, electric and plug-in hybrid engines), evaluates which of them is currently the most beneficial to use in the city in environmental, technical and economic terms. The analysis was carried out for two situations: (1) total emissions from the production of fuel, manufacture of the vehicle and its use, (2) vehicle emissions during its use using one of the multi-criteria optimization methods – the point method.
