Abstract A Level II AFDA reliability model was developed for the probabilistic analysis of random wave overtopping which happens due to the interaction between the incident waves and sloped coastal structures. The reliability model developed in the present study was verified by Level III MCS reliability model. The partial safety factors of each random variable related to wave overtopping was calculated by inverse analysis method using the influence factors estimated by Level II AFDA reliability model, statistical properties of random variables, and the target probabilities of failure. The method which can easily apply the Level I reliability design method was presented. Especially, the design criteria for wave overtopping were derived maintaining the same formulation with the existing deterministic design method. Finally, design criteria and partial safety factors estimated in the present study were satisfactorily verified by the comparisons of results redesigned by Level I reliability-based design method using partial safety factors and Level II reliability-based design method.
