The focus of this paper is the research of modeling the advancement of transport units on the railway network and assessing the delays that arise. If the task were to be solved by scheduling and constructing variant train schedules, a large amount of associated data would be processed, which significantly reduced the effectiveness of the method itself. Therefore, simulation of the demand for transportation and the promotion of transport units on the railway network helps to solve this problem. The subject of the study was the process of moving transport units on the rail network and the delays that were involved. The purpose of the work is to develop a method for determining the value of delays in the passage of train flows with a different amount of infrastructure load and a different ratio of train categories (passenger or freight) in the flow. At the same time, transportation requests are modeled by forming a random flow of requirements. Using simulation models, the value of train delays on the railway network depends on the load and the ratio of trains of different speeds (freight or passenger). This article also contains other examples of the mathematical modelling application to various types of transport tasks and is of an overview nature. In addition, the article describes the main differences between the simulation model and the analytical model, which made it possible to understand the specifics of each of them better. It is of interest for the transport workers and scientists conducting research in the field of traffic flows optimization.
