This paper presents physical features on the flushing process of an embankment having noncohesive materials due to overflow and the mathematical formulations for the overflow erosion in the unsteady flow. Flushing over an embankment is classified into three regions such as the upstream sheet erosion, the lee-side vortex erosion and the downstream deposition. Erosion rate in the unsteady flow was obtained using the dynamic Coulomb criterion and the storage equation based on a grain-inertia regime of the fluid-granule mixed flow. For a design purpose, formulas for estimating the erosion rate and the erosion time required for a complete erosion were obtained with given values of an inflow, an embankment size and a sediment size.
