Abstract We present a modified approach of obtaining the probability of successful packet transmission for MAC layer protocol. Over a decade, several works have proposed different ways of obtaining the probability of successful transmission to compute the throughput for both the legacy 802.11 DCF and cooperative-based MAC protocols. Although, most work in the MAC layer perspective has employed the traditional probability of successful transmission, we exploit the successful exchange of control and data packet transmission between nodes to obtain the probability of successful transmission. We then compare the performance of our modified probability of success transmission and the traditional through simulation study. The result obtained shows that the network throughput of the cooperative-based MAC protocol with modified probability of successful transmission outperforms the traditional by a performance gain of 3.06% at the lowest number of nodes in the network.
