Abstract The present paper deals with the problem of controlling a class of distributed parameter flow systems, using dynamical lumped parameter controllers. The asymptotic stability of the closed loop transient response is investigated using a quadratic Lyapunov functional. A simple stability criterion is obtained in function of the controller's transfer matrix, allowing an easy design based on technical frequency domain specifications. As an application, the control of heat exchangers is extensively discussed. Both linear control, by varying the inlet temperatures, and nonlinear control using flow rates as input variables, are considered. The theoretical stability limits are computed and compared with results obtained by digital simulation.
