One of the key objectives of the Gemini program was the development of orbital rendezvous. This was a challenging task, one for which Gemini 5 would play a key role by building on the experience of the previous two missions, with each a step towards the first planned docking with an uncrewed target vehicle on the next mission, Gemini 6. Also assigned to the Gemini 5 mission was the first use of fuel cells, replacing the chemical batteries previously used to power the spacecraft and thus providing a new capability to extend the orbital duration of a crewed mission from mere hours to several days; in this case to eight days, the expected duration of an Apollo lunar mission. This desire to expand orbital operations with Gemini 5 would realize decades old dreams of expanding human presence in space.
