The article is devoted to the problem of the development of maritime law in the Middle Ages. The study aims to identify the features of the maritime laws in this historical period in the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas. The subject of the article is the Amalfian laws, Catalan maritime law, maritime legislation in the era of the Crusades, maritime legislation of Northern Europe. The tasks are solved using a dialectical approach, which makes it possible to trace the stages of the emergence and development of various institutions of maritime law, the formation of different schools of maritime law, and their mutual influence, as a result of which new sub-branches of maritime law are identified, currently in place. When working with sources, we used the problem-chronological method based on the principle of historicism and legal hermeneutics. These ways make it possible to study and interpret legal texts. The research hypothesizes that in the medieval era, which is traditionally considered a time of stagnation, maritime law was beginning to develop rapidly and outstrip other legal branches. The peculiarity of transport routes and the priority of sea traffic in the Middle Ages were largely associated with the existing feudal fragmentation, the low authority of the rulers of states among local feudal lords, the emergence of border customs, and extortions in every subject of European states. Economic and social processes have caused the need to create legal instruments to regulate navigation and ensure its safety.
