P2 resonance affects irregular wear of wheel and rail profiles, which are the main source of noise and vibration in railway operations. The vibrations of multiple wheels and track coupled systems are investigated, and the natural frequencies and mode shapes are determined by solving the characteristic equation with Green’s function and Laplace transform. The proposed method provides the basis for further studies on irregular wear of contact surfaces, such as rail corrugation and wheel out-of-roundness, and for measures to mitigate ground vibration in railway operations.
