The objective of real-time road condition measurement is to estimate factors in traffic conditions based on measurement data obtained. The Literature has indicated real-world driving vehicles’ ride quality, fuel consumption, and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions are sensitive to road conditions and road grade. A series of emissions tests were conducted with a selected vehicle on a local series of routes in Sydney NSW, Australia. A Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS) unit was temporarily installed in the vehicle to collect, analyze, and record the vehicle’s emissions and fuel consumption. The road condition/vehicle dynamics data was measured with an externally installed Inertia Measuring Unit (IMU). The vehicle’s exact longitudinal and lateral coordinates were validated with a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver. The data collected were used to compare and evaluate the respective accuracies. This chapter then concludes with observations, results, and discussion of this project.
