This chapter introduces the main issues related to collision avoidance and safe trajectory planning for ships. Information that can be found in this chapter include: the definition of the safe trajectory planning problem, the constraints and assumptions of this process, the structure of ship motion control system with an emphasis on a subsystem responsible for collision avoidance, the methods applied for collision risk assessment, the kinematics and dynamics of the collision avoidance process. The following part of this chapter includes the description of input data defining the navigational situation at sea, the methods of navigational environment modeling and the mechanisms applied in order to achieve a solution compliant with The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
