Abstract This study first demonstrates how the market conditions influence on the accident frequency of four of the world’s largest tanker companies. It is demonstrated that the accident frequency increases with a factor of three when the freight rates turn from a positive to a negative development. This difference is significant, but far lower than what was found within the passenger ship market.
