Abstract Vehicle to Infrastructure communications (V2I) is one of the emerging connected vehicles technologies. V2I holds a promise for significant benefits to both road users and operators. Automotive manufacturers and USDOT invested considerable research efforts in V2I communications technology. This lead to many standardized messages as well as application concepts. United States is running several V2I deployments sites. This chapter provides an overview of these deployment efforts. Several aspects make the V2I technology attractive to the ITS industry. These include early deployment benefits, extended information sharing ranges and sensing capabilities. These aspects may provide substantial safety, mobility, and environmental value. This chapter will discuss such aspects. In addition, this chapter deliberates on V2I technology and the benefits it offers beyond V2V communication. Here we cover the details of V2I Over the Air (OTA) messages. We provide and discuss the messages developed by research and standardization organizations. Such messages enable a wide variety of V2I safety, mobility, and environmental applications. The chapter covers examples of these applications in details.
