The traffic conditions of Bangladeshi roads are very different from many other countries. Traffic on Bangladeshi roads is highly mixed with vast differences in the static and dynamic characteristics of that vehicle. This study attempts to show the traffic condition in an undivided two-way road and the drivers’ overtaking tendency of a slow moving vehicle. Overtaking a vehicle is one of the most critical, trick manoeuvres on undivided roads where vehicles use the opposing lane to overtake the relatively slower vehicle with or without giving attention to the opposite lane vehicles. In most cases, overtaking is nearly unavoidable because of the mixed traffic condition on the road with heterogeneous traffic. The main goal of this analytical study is to understand the overtaking characteristics of vehicles on Bangabandhu bridge approach road (NH 405) an undivided road of 2 km section under mixed traffic conditions. Types of overtaking and overtaken data had collected using two distinguished methods (moving car observer method and registration plate method). Traffic characteristics studied by flow rates, types of overtaking, and overtaken vehicles that took place in both flying and accelerative overtaking drivers’ characteristics are studied by analysing overtaking behaviour by registration number plate methods. Speed studies carried out for the better understanding of drivers’ tendency to overtake slow moving vehicles. The output from this study will be helpful to understand the overtaking behaviour of vehicles on the road. These parameters of the traffic and behaviour of drivers can use in the development of traffic simulations models in the future to culminate in the desired state of the road traffic system in Bangladesh.
