Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) formation cooperation operation has gradually become the current hot spot of UAV application. This paper proposes a method for autonomous formation control of UAV based on multi-strategy search improved pigeon-inspired optimization (MSIPIO). The MIPIO algorithm has a significant improvement in convergence accuracy and can effectively avoid falling into local optimal solutions. Firstly, the flight dynamics of the leader-follower are modeled separately; Secondly, using the artificial potential field (APF) method to maintain the ideal formation; Then, based on the pigeon-inspired optimization (PIO) algorithm, completing the optimization solution of the UAV control quantity. The structure of PIO has been adjusted on the basis of the basic PIO thoughts, Using multi-strategy search to improve PIO and comparing it with relevant PIO algorithms in the test function, verifying the effectiveness of MSIPIO optimization. Finally, the effectiveness of the control system is verified by simulation experiment.
