Abstract The landing gear chapter discusses that subsystem that operates for only a brief period during the takeoff roll and landing cycle. However, despite the brevity of its operation, it provides a vital role to the overall passenger experience. The chapter discusses the change from fixed tail draggers to the moveable tricycle landing gear of today. The stowable landing gear provided a means to reduce overall airplane drag, improve fuel economy, and raise the top speed. This section describes the pressurized struts used to absorb the sink rate energy of the fuselage upon touchdown. Finally, the chapter provides insight into the hydraulic systems used to apply brake pressure and the tremendous energy dissipated and heat built up during a typical braking event upon landing.
