This study presents a method for predicting the viscosity of engine oil by using information on the amount of increase in coolant temperature and outside temperature that can be measured in OBDII of automobiles. In every driving distance of 3000 ∼ 5000 km, the amount of coolant temperature rise over time was measured through the OBDII output terminal in the environmental chamber, and the time for the coolant temperature to reach a specific value was defined as the coolant characteristic value. After measuring the actual vehicle, engine oil was extracted and the viscosity was measured to analyze the correlation between the coolant temperature rise and the viscosity. The coolant characteristics measured at a mileage of 10,137 km show similar levels of 78.6 % of the initial value and 74.3 % of the initial value of engine oil, coolant characteristic value and engine oil viscosity show a close relationship. Through engineering analysis, a mathematical formula and ANN model that can predict the engine oil viscosity value according to the change in coolant characteristics and outside temperature was proposed.
