This chapter deals with safety in the sense of limiting the potential catastrophes that embedded systems could cause. Timing is only one aspect of many in embedded software. However, there can be no safe embedded software without stable and secure timing.

In addition to technical topics, legal aspects are also addressed. Managers and project managers are confronted with many questions regarding the kind of timing analysis that has to be performed, and what timing protection needs to be implemented in order to be legally well positioned.
