Abstract Powder metallurgy duplex stainless steel was prepared from 310L, 304L, and 430L pre-alloyed powder with the addition of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum with appropriate proportions. Two different green compacts of DSS with the dimension of 30 mm diameter and 12 mm height were compacted by universal testing machine at a pressure level of 560 ± 10 MPa and subsequently sintered at 1300 ± 10 °C in partial vacuum and hydrogen atmosphere. Sintered compacts were subjected to densification studies, microstructure analysis, hardness measurement, and evaluation of tensile properties. The microstructure indicates the presence of austenite and ferrite phases and confirms the duplex structure. Sintered density is in the range of 91–93% of its theoretical density. Further, sintered samples were forged at 1150 °C and subsequently quenched in water to avoid the formation of undesirable phases. Highest tensile strength of 723 MPa and hardness of 62 HRC were exhibited for the duplex stainless steel prepared from 310L and 430L powders.
