Track as the railway infrastructure, its integrity affects the safety of the train operation, thus it is necessary to check the breakage of tracks. As a kind of solid medium, the track itself has good acoustic conductivity, and also because of the advantages of ultrasonic guided waves (UGW) in structural health monitoring, UGW is more and more widely used in track breakage detection method. The current UGW-based track detection systems are composed of a series of UGW sensor nodes, and each node has a wireless communication module, while, for the areas such as large long tunnels with poor wireless transmission signals, it is necessary to find a new method for information transmission between each node. In order to solve this problem, this work proposed a pulse position modulation (PPM)-based digital communication method to transmit information between each node by the track itself. This supplementary capability of exchange information by the wave guide itself represents a novel trend in track breakage detection.
