Space security is part of the overall international security, the maintenance of which constitutes the fundamental purpose of the UN Charter. In particular, preserving security with respect to the celestial bodies requires the activation of mechanisms able to guarantee that the existing status quo (global commons’ character, applicability of international law, peaceful use, prohibition of harmful contamination) will not be compromised by the placement of offensive weapons on them or potential disputes concerning the exploitation of space resources. Another concern is the control of cosmic hazards (planetary defense), although, in this case, security on Earth will be at stake.
