The design of the Perseverance rover evolved from its predecessor, the Curiosity rover of the Mars Science Laboratory mission which was launched on November 26, 2011 and arrived on Mars on August 6, 2012 after a daring landing sequence that NASA called “Seven Minutes of Terror.” The two rovers, both built by JPL, share many design features but play different roles in the ongoing exploration of Mars and the search for evidence of ancient life. They also differ in key mission-specific ways: while Curiosity has identified and continues to study environments where microbes could have lived early in Mars’ history, Perseverance’s task is to seek direct signs of such life and prepare geological samples that a future mission could bring back to Earth.
