The traditional pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) algorithm restricting the pose of user to carry a smartphone, which limits the use of the algorithm and seriously affects the user experience. In order to realize the pedestrian positioning and navigation with variable device carrying mode, the recognition and judgment of the device using-mode becomes necessary prerequisites. Under different carrying modes of the smartphone, the data of the gravimeter, which is derived from the data of the accelerometer, showing different distribution characteristics on the gravity ball, while it is untrustworthy to identify multiple pedestrian behaviors with static empirical threshold. A novel clustering algorithm based on using-mode recognition and attitude conversion detection method for smartphones is proposed, and an adaptive dynamic pedestrian using-mode recognition algorithm is designed. The experimental results of smartphone using-mode recognition for multiple pedestrians show that the highest recognition rate of each smartphone’s using-mode recognition rate is 100%, and the lowest recognition rate is 99%, the universality of the algorithm is good.
