Rail transport represented a major development in land transport technology and has introduced an important change in the movement of freight and passengers. Railway is recognized as the most reliable, time-efficient, energy-efficient, comfortable, cheapest, environment-friendly, and the safest mode of transport in all over the world. Beginning in 1862, a total of five railway companies worked to expand the railway in East Bengal during the colonial period. Starting in 1862 with 53.11 km railway route length, Bangladesh Railway developed 2825.78 km railway route length in 1969–1970 and increased to 2955.53 km at the end of the year 2017–2018. At the end of 2017–2018, only 43 Civil Districts out of 64 districts are connected by railway services. The development progress of railway services in Bangladesh during this long 158 years is not remarkable as it should have been. However, in recent years, the government of Bangladesh has taken a major step to develop the rail system. Development projects include several new rail route construction, rehabilitation of all weak rail routes, modernization of railway workshops, remodelling of station yards, converting the metre gauge line into broad gauge or dual gauge, new connectivity route with neighbouring India, updated railway master plan (2016–2045), extension of rail route in existing corridor, seventh five year plan (2016–2020), etc. This paper highlights the milestones chronologically in this development progress of railway services in Bangladesh.
