More than 52 years after the launch of Sputnik, the latest versions of the Semyorka were about to open a new chapter in the history of cosmonautics in a very different landscape from the steppes of Baikonur or the forests of Plesetsk – this time on the coastal savannah of French Guiana. The two Soyuz-2.la launchers unloaded from the MN Colibri cargo ship on November 25, 2009, were just the first in a series which Europeans and Russians hope will be a long one. The Soyuz-2.1 b followed in June 2011, since even before the first launchers reached South America, Starsem's launch manifest was already quite long.
