The work deals with the motion of broken ice floes sliding along the hull. Model tests were performed with segmented icebreakers to measure the distribution of forces at the hull. Pressure transducers were built into the model’s shape to measure the pressure field between ice and hull. These tests demonstrate the existence of a low pressure phenomenon which explains the unexpected high percentage of resistance caused below the waterline. Measurements were performed in full-scale to confirm the existence of the phenomenon in real icebreakers. A theory was elaborated and a numerical model was developed to predict the motion of floes sliding along the hull. The results are compared with model tests showing good agreement.
