Bringing down the cost of access to space is a major goal of space programme around the world today. The payload fraction ranges from 0.4% to 1% of the total mass depending upon the mission and efficiency of the system. Hardware accounts for 80% of the launch cost. One of the concepts being perceived is recovery of the spent stages and reuse for multiple times to reduce the cost. The sounding rocket is a single-stage rocket with solid propellant loading which can deliver the pay load of 50 kg. The vehicle reaches to maximum altitude of around 90 km, and experiments are being performed. The present stage and payload are expendables. The impact velocity of the payload without Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (IAD) is order of 270 m/s. The scope of the present work is as a small step towards the recovery of stage; the payload recovery is being attempted. This paper mainly addresses recovery of a payload from sounding rocket using Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator, which is a simple and passive system. This paper mainly addresses IAD configuration sizing which will reduce the impact velocity by one order less than the without IAD configuration. Detailed mission studies, structural construction and thermal aspects are also addressed.
