Since the reform and opening-up, the transport sector in China has made great achievements. The overall scale of the transport sector is expanding at an amazing rate. Compared with 1978, the volume of freight transport rose by 1779.8% in 2016, and the volume of passenger transport rose by 1693.3% in 2016. However, the rapid development of transport has also brought a lot of transport safety problems.
Road traffic accidents are the main type of traffic accidents. In China, during 2016, there happened 212,846 road traffic accidents, causing 63,093 deaths and 226,430 injuries. Currently, about 50 million people worldwide die from traffic accidents each year, while the number of people in China die each year from traffic accidents accounts for about one-fifth of the world, ranking second in the world.
In order to prevent innocent lives from being killed in traffic accidents, effectively protect personal and property safety, and realize sustainable economic development, it is of great practical significance to study the current situation and influencing factors of transport safety and further formulate effective measures.
The significance of this chapter is that: (1) based on the existing research, this research attempts to analyze the overall characteristics of road traffic accidents and casualties in China, so that readers can have a clearer understanding of the overall situation of transport safety in China. (2) Based on the provincial panel data from 2003 to 2016, this study analyzes the temporal and spatial characteristics of the road traffic mortality rate (RTMR) in China, which can give a more reasonable reference for evaluating the regional transport safety performance. (3) The empirical analysis of the influencing factors of RTMR in China can make up for the research deficiencies, which can provide reference for effective transport safety policies.
