Putting a crew together is always a challenging task, based on skill, experience and personalities balanced with their ability to complete tasks assigned to the mission. Not only does the crew need to work together as a cohesive team to ensure mission objectives are met successfully and above all safely, but ideally they also have to get along in the confines of their spacecraft for the duration of the mission. Chapter 2 explores the backgrounds of Gordon Cooper and Pete Conrad, to the point of their assignment to the mission. Pairing up two-man teams for the very demanding Gemini missions was additionally challenging, as the idea of a ‘crewed’ spaceflight was still relatively new in 1965. For Gemini, a new crewing system was devised, in which one crew would back up another for one flight before flying their own mission three flights later. This format would operate successfully into 1972, throughout the Apollo lunar program.
