As the final full day in space arrived, the consumption of coffee by mission controllers increased. Meanwhile, the status of the spacecraft, its systems and the options available were relayed to the crew, who in turn reported the latest issues they were facing. This included problems with the onboard computer. Work on the experiments continued, as did observation of the developing storm patterns close to the recovery site. The crew’s wellbeing was holding up, supported by messages from home and the dry wit of Pete Conrad. As well as the challenges faced by the crew, the mission was putting great demands on their families, trying to continue a ‘normal’ daily life in the full glare of the world’s press as their menfolk were truly ‘out of town’ for a week.
