This chapter provides an overview of the physical and computational models frequently used in the simulation of pedestrian and cyclist accidents. The main strengths and weaknesses of the different approaches are presented and the extent to which each method has been validated using experimental data is assessed. Finally, the state-of-the-art for these methods is presented and a summary of what each can yield is provided. These models form the basis for assessing the influence of vehicle design on pedestrian and cyclist injuries which will be presented in Chapter 10.
