Abstract The out-of-plane stress is very influential in the rock yield behavior; however, its effects on plastic stress field around subsea tunnels have not yet been analytically performed due to a lack of understanding of the relationship between the out-of-plane stress and the major/minor principal stress at failure. In this regard, a non-associated ow rule is utilized. With the established equilibrium equation, the nonlinear and linear solutions to the 3-Dimensional plastic stress field around subsea tunnels excavated in a Zhang 3D HB and Drucker-Prager rock mass are derived, and seepage body force is taken into account. After validation, a comparison of the changes in mechanical responses for various parameters in the two solutions is carried out. The analyses show that a significant difference exists in 3-Dimensional plastic stress as well as the plastic radius, which indicates that the analytical solution presented can be effectively used for the realistic design of subsea tunnels.
