Abstract The expected traffic evolution is sketched and some consequences are considered. It is suggested to include in the “Air Segment” the movements of the planes in the airport apron. The automation of the movements seems a necessity. Three major factors interacting with the flights are considered: the possibility of a fully automatic flight, the use of an unique worldwide navigation and landing system and the concept of “free flight” (or autonomous flight). Finally, the possibility of a global optimization in a large zone is discussed.
