Abstract The development of real-time handover and multi-modulation systems is a key issue for meeting the challenges of multiple users, variable access, and highly diversified modulation schemes in satellite communications. In this study, a novel parameterised sub-component decomposition and state-mapping-based unified modulation model is accordingly developed. The model linearly expresses the arbitrary modulated signal through sub-component decomposition and constructs a time-homogeneous Markovian mapping state set on the basis of the projection coefficients. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that, with seven sub-components, our model can uniformly generate modulated signals which are virtually identical with the conventional ones. With the features of structural efficiency, signal expression flexibility, and mapping-rule consistency, our model represents a feasible contribution to next-generation satellite communication systems.
