The first two steps in the design of a control loop, namely the identification of the plant and based on this the controller setting, are done with Data Stream Managers (DSM). This term denotes the system of modules for the uniform treatment of signals and data transmission during the entire life cycle of a control system. With the DSM “Ident” for the plant identification, the step responses are recorded at the output of the plant and verified using classic methods (turning-point-tangent method and time-percentage-values method). The results of the plant identification are passed on to the DSM “Tuner”, from the name of which is evident its function, namely the automatic setting of standard controllers. In addition, an AFIC (Adaptive Filter for Identification and Control) is described in this chapter, in which the identification and the controller design take place with only one DSM.
