Abstract The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has undertaken development of a ground-based augmentation system (GBAS) as an enhancement to the Global Positioning System (GPS) in the form of a Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS). In conjunction with the Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), LAAS will provide seamless navigational capability within US airspace for precision approach landing guidance and, potentially, for airport surface navigation. LAAS is being developed in two primary phases, first for Category 1 and secondly to reach Category 2 and 3 minimum performance. In addition, complex procedures are being developed to exploit LAAS benefits to maximize the use of critical airspace and runway configurations in all weather conditions.
