Dhaka metropolitan area is divided into two city corporations, namely Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation. The approximate area of DNCC is 197 square kilometers and area of DSCC is 109 square kilometers. There are sidewalks on only 400 km of roadway which is 13.33%, and it is out of total 3000 km roadway network of Dhaka metropolitan area. This paper presents effective widths of some major sidewalks in Dhaka city and their obstruction types. Level of Service B, C and D were found in eight areas of two Dhaka city corporations. Photographs taken and measured data at those roads shown that only 55% of the total width of the sidewalks are effectively available. For example, one of the major roads of the study area was Khilgaon-Taltola road which is in the area of mixed land use (residential and commercial). Sidewalk was found on each side of the roads, width and height were found, respectively, 2.15 m and 0.25 m. 1.2 m of width was found occupied by various obstructions such as electric poles, parked vehicles, temporary shops and construction equipment. So immediate action is required to clear the sidewalks for their efficient use.
