In this paper, the boundary element (BE) technique is used to analyse the effects of 12 different holes in the crankpin and journal on the crankpin and journal fillet stress distributions. Significant reductions in journal fillet peak stresses can be achieved under radial bending, but crankpin fillet maxima are slightly increased. The angular position of the SCF is changed from a single peak in the longitudinal plane of symmetry for a solid crankshaft to two peaks symmetrically positioned relative to this longitudinal plane of symmetry for bored crankshafts. Under torsion, there is a change in fillet stress distribution, but little variation in SCF. Under both load cases, the stiffness of the crankshaft is slightly reduced.
