This paper presents the design of an hydraulically restricted differential of a cylindrical gear type and the results of its laboratory testing. In the differential, the externally meshing sections of the pinion gears were tightly sealed and employed for pumping action. A test stand was designed and a test programme established to evaluate the most important characteristics of the differential. It was concluded that the tested mechanism would be capable of developing the required level of resistance torque on condition that the vehicle was fitted with a hub reduction gear and the temperature of the oil did not exceed 50°C. The efficiency of a simple system of oil delivery was also controlled and assessed as satisfactory.
