The paper presents the practical application of the responsibility-sharing management (RSM) approach in the effective management of welding distortion in ship production. The paper begins with a brief outline of the RSM approach before examining key features of its six elements in more detail. Techniques of hazard identification, risk assessment and risk reduction are used to derive cost effective methods for controlling welding distortion while taking into account management, operational aspects and human factors as well as technical aspects. An illustrative example is used to demonstrate the effective use of this approach in a shipyard. The main conclusion is that the proposed RSM approach, which has already been successfully implemented in practice for addressing ship safety, has been shown in this paper to be applicable to various areas of shipbuilding, including coping with welding distortion.
