The increasing demand for economy and performance in aircraft gas turbine engines requires constant surveillance of new materials and processes to reduce fabricating costs and engine weight. Preliminary studies of fiberglass reinforced plastic as a structural material for the transonic axial compressor rotor and stator assembly on the J69 engine indicated possible cost and weight reduction.Property characteristics for various types of fiberglass reinforced plastic, and the design concepts utilized for the above components, are discussed, as well as fabrication techniques and the results of both static and spin pit tests. Engine tests conducted with fiberglass reinforced plastic components demonstrated that comparable engine performance characteristics are obtainable from both fiberglass and steel compressor rotor blades.
