The austempered ductile iron (ADI) is a kind of material that arouses growing interests in Research & Development and industrial circles, because of technological benefits of it metallic matrix. Due the austempering heat treatment, the obtained matrix is composed by nodular graphite immersed in acicular ferrite and high carbon stabilized austenite. Also known as ausferrite, this triad results in an exceptional combination of properties such as good toughness, high mechanical strength and considerable wear resistance. The main objective of this study is the incremental improvement of the component initially designed in SAE J434 D5506, through the characterization and use of austempered grade IV. This material was applied in the wear plate of a semi-heavy 6x2 suspension with hard-axle in tandem with rocker arm to increase, at least, 100% the wear resistance life of the component when used on the roads. For this purpose, it was used as reference the Standard ASTM A897/A897M and a ductile iron with 3.71% Carbon and 2.65% Silicon (both in weight), submitted to austempering process. From both materials, representative samples to test in Proving Camp were manufactured, analyzed by optical microscopy (OM), X-ray diffraction (DR-x) and mechanical tests. A qualitative evaluation of the wear of both configurations was also carried out after field-testing, through scanning process and weighing. Based on the results achieved, it was concluded that the component wear resistance improvement depends directly on the quality of the ductile iron before treating, the controls in the heat treatment and the obtained matrix. Thus, the initial hypothesis was corroborated, increasing the component wear life in the field from 196,000 to 413,000 kilometers.
