To provide a Recommended Practice for validating the function and integrity of an automatic transmission park mechanism with its associated control system and environment. This document is published as Stabilize – the technology has not changed and does not need to be updated. Much of the content within SAE J2208 relies on U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and the portions of the standard that are unique do not fully represent current common practices within the automotive engineering community. When this standard was initially drafted, it reflected a common philosophy towards the validation of a park system. Since that time, technologies have added complexities to the validation and members of the engineering community have diverged in their methods of validating park systems beyond the minimum requirements specified within the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
