Steering kickback is sharp transient vibration of front wheel around steering axis due to small obstacle at low speed cornering condition. After impact of front wheel, kingpin moment is taken about kingpin axis by dynamic balance between inertial and external force in rotational unsprung mass. This moment is transferred to steering wheel column, and finally makes driver feel uncomfortable. This study reveals each contribution of external and inertial force with component load method, and it is found that longitudinal impact force and self-aligning moment dominate steering kickback. Some methods are dealt with in order to reduce kingpin moment from viewpoint of suspension geometry and package layout.
