Based on limited data and current costs for constant dollar projections far five years, the City of Greenville, South Carolina, has found that the projected total average cost per mile for its electric vehicles in fleet operation will be approximately 128% more than for similar usage ICE vehicles for 23.6 miles average daily usage. The critical factor in the actual and projected total average cost per mile is battery life cycle cost per mile. Operating experience to date is favorable; however, the key to the increased usage of EVs is a breakthrough in battery technology resulting in improved cost benefits.
